Vinalhaven is a small island off the coast of Rockland, Maine, with a year-round population of approximately 1,200. Visitors to the island take a ferry from Rockland -- the ferry can carry up to 16 cars and takes approximately 75 minutes to reach the island. Recreation on Vinalhaven includes swimming quarries, sailing and hiking paths.
Located in the heart of Vinalhaven's downtown area, The Tidewater Motel is owned and operated by Phil and Elaine Crossman. The couple purchased the property from Phil's parents in 1986. The Tidewater offers ocean views, and basic in-room amenities. Most rooms overlook Carver's Harbor and feature a private deck that hangs over the water. The motel's central location puts it within 1/2 mile of many of the island's restaurants, including The Harbor Gawker, where the menu includes baked goods, fresh fish and other low-key island fare. Bicycle, kayak and canoe rentals are all available at the Tidewater.
Situated inside a French Victorian house, the Payne Homestead is in a house built in 1873. The house has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1998, and has been in operation as a bed and breakfast since 1995. A minimum two-night stay is required for weekend reservations -- no minimum is required Sunday through Thursday. The Payne Homestead is 1/2 a mile from the ferry terminal and approximately one mile away from the Lane's Island Nature Conservancy, a park along the water. Family-style breakfast is served for all guests at 8 a.m.
The Old Granite Inn is in Rockland, Maine, approximately 1/2 mile from the ferry terminal for the ride to Vinalhaven. Overnight visitors to the island frequently spend an evening in Rockland before taking an early morning ferry over to the island, whether for a day trip or an overnight stay. The inn houses eight guestrooms, seven with a private bathroom. A full breakfast is served daily.
