Statesville, North Carolina, is at the intersection of Interstates 77 and 40, both of which are major transportation routes. The city has an interesting history itself, and it is in the middle of a lot of action. It is 50 miles north of Charlotte, and 50 miles southwest of Winston Salem and Greensboro. The city is near Lake Catawba and Lake Norman State Park, and is about 50 miles west of Cherokee National Forest. Many hotels are available for a base to explore this area.

  1. Quality Inn and Suites

    • The Quality Inn on Sullivan Road is just off Interstate 40 and about a mile from the intersection with Interstate 77. This hotel has 107 rooms on two floors. The rooms surround a grassy area and an outdoor pool. There are smoking and non-smoking rooms available. The hotel offers a free breakfast, and there is a fitness center and a business center for guests. Pets are allowed with a $25 per pet fee, as of 2011. Several restaurants are in the immediate area; within walking distances are places like Mayos Ristorante, Mi Pueblo, Cracker Barrel, Sagebrush and Red Lobster, as well as many fast food type eateries.

    • The Red Roof Inn is just off Interstate 77, and about a mile from Interstate 40. The hotel is near Signal Hill Mall and the JR Outlet Center, two major shopping areas for the region. One pet per room is allowed without a fee, and children 17 and under may stay free with a paying adult. Suites are larger than standard rooms and have a separate work area with a large chair or couch. There are the usual national chains for food, such as Shoney's, Village Inn Pizza, Golden China and Burger King. A local hangout nearby is Gluttons Restaurant and Bar.

    • The Holiday Inn Express at Statesville is at the intersection of Interstate 77 and U.S. Highway 70, which is another major interchange for the city with several hotels and restaurants in the immediate area. This hotel has 77 rooms and 20 suites spread through four floors. There is an elevator and five rooms equipped for the handicapped. This hotel is near the Richard Petty Motorsports Museum, Lake Norman state Park and the site of the National Balloon Rally. There is an indoor pool for guests. A free breakfast is served. Many restaurants dot the area, but for something out of the ordinary, consider locally famous hamburgers at the Alamo Wistle Stop Cafe on Shelton Avenue, toward downtown.

    The Kerr House Bed and Breakfast

    • The Kerr House is a historic home built in 1891 and is near U.S. Highway 64 in the downtown area. It is on Davie Avenue, in the historic district, surrounded by many large old homes on the wide and tree lined street. The house has a wrap-around porch with chairs. A gourmet breakfast is served on fine china in the dining room. In room massages are available. Four rooms display decorations in Victorian era trim and furniture. This home allows no pets or tobacco.
