As its name suggests, Gruetli-Laager is comprised of two different communities united to form a single city. It boasts a population of less than 2,000 citizens, according to the 2000 census. German-speaking Swiss formed the city in the late 19th century. Although Gruetli-Laager does not have any hotels of its own, there are plenty of places to stay within a 30-minute radius of the city center.
Southern Comfort Resort is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It offers a range of accommodation options, including cabin rentals, tent sites and RV sites. Spread over 80 acres in the forest, this is a good option for hiking enthusiasts, as it is surrounded by trails, many of which end up at rolling streams.
Mountain Inn and Suites is located in the nearby city of Dunlap, famous for its scenic Fall Creek Falls State Park. Chattanooga is only 40 minutes away from the property. A free continental breakfast is offered to all guests of the Mountain Inn and Suites each morning. While there is no restaurant on the premises, there is one located next door, along with a gas station. Rooms with Jacuzzis are available.
The Valley Inn and Sports Bar is a motel in Dunlap that is popular among bikers. The motel contains 13 rooms. Free wireless Internet access is available throughout the property. Each room comes equipped with cable television, microwave oven and refrigerator. The on-site sports bar hosts such weekly events as Sunday Ticket NFL, Wednesday karaoke night and frequent "buffalo wings and beer" specials. The bar also serves such food as burgers, Philly cheese steaks, chicken fingers, chips and salsa, peel and eat shrimp and onion rings. The Best Western Smoke House Lodge is located 30 minutes outside of Gruetli-Laager off of Interstate 24 in Monteagle. The hotel is home to Jim Oliver's Smokehouse Restaurant, which hosts singer-songwriters from Nashville on the weekends, as well as an old-fashioned general store. You'll find more than 20 acres of recreational grounds on the property, including several hiking trails. You can also enjoy such games as horseshoes. The hotel has its own private fishing lake, as well as tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the premises.
