Traditional Japanese Hotels in Kyoto

Kyoto means "Central Capital," and in the Japanese mind, no other city in Japan exemplifies traditional Japanese culture like Kyoto. While in Kyoto, you will experience the feeling of Old Japan that permeates the ancient capital. You may even catch a glimpse of a Kyoto geisha traveling the backstreets of Kyoto. Traditional Japanese hotels or inns called "ryokan," are all over Kyoto, and they offer comfortable, Japanese-style rooms with futons on tatami mat-covered floors for sleeping.

  1. Nishiyama Ryokan

    • The Nishiyama Ryokan is located in the center of Kyoto, minutes from Kyoto Imperial Park. It welcomes English-speaking guests with authentic Japanese hospitality. The Japanese-style rooms have traditional tatami mats with low tables and chairs and seasonal flowers, as well as local guidebooks in English. Nishiyama Ryokan also offers Western-style rooms with twin beds, and large Japanese-style rooms to accommodate families. The room furnishings are moved at night to make space for the plush, Japanese futon mattresses and duvets, especially welcome after a soak in the inn's large Japanese-style bath. All rooms include a private bath, TV and refrigerator. Overnight stays can include an optional Japanese breakfast and a beautifully prepared, "kaiseki" or multi-course, seasonal dinner.
