How to Transfer the Title of a House Boat in Oregon

Oregon houseboats are treated like regular boats, titled and registered by the Oregon State Marine Board. Houseboats are issued an identification plate to verify ownership and boat identification. A houseboat is defined as living quarters built on a floating dock, or a floating structure built to protect boats in storage, or a combination of both. The title transfer process has more in common with an automobile title transfer than a real estate sale. The title transfer process is quite straightforward, even with out-of-state boats sold in Oregon.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the seller sign and date the "release of interest" portion of the title, if you are the buyer.

    • 2

Fill out the Oregon State Marine Board Application for Floating Home or Boathouse Title. This can be downloaded from their website at boatoregon.com. See Resources.

    • 3

Send or deliver your forms to the Oregon State Marine Board, P.O. Box 14145, Salem, Oregon, with the appropriate fees. Boating registration is $3 per rounded foot of the length. There is also a $20 title transfer fee for a houseboat, and a $25 late fee if the title is transferred more than 30 days after the sale. A $5 Aquatic Invasive Species surcharge may be included.

Complete the Application for Floating Home or Boathouse Title for a houseboat registered out-of-state as well, but include the other state's title. Include the out-of-state registration and a bill-of-sale if there is no title. Include the fees and send or deliver to the Oregon State Marine Board.
