American Falls, Idaho RV Camping

American Falls, Idaho, has at least three RV campgrounds as of 2010 that are located near the airport and the main interstate that runs through the city. The campgrounds offer easy access for travelers and feature outdoor activities like fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and biking. One of the campgrounds has an elevation of more than 4,000 feet and offers hiking, mountain climbing and mountain biking.

    • Three of the campgrounds in American Falls--Massacre Rocks State Park, the Willow Bay Recreation Area and the Power County Fairgrounds--are located less than two miles from Interstate 86 for easy access for travelers. Willow Bay Recreation is situated right on the reservoir at American Falls Dam, and its campsites are within walking distance of swimming, boating and fishing. Massacre Rocks State Park offers mountain climbing and hiking on its mountains that are situated above the Snake River.

    Rates

    • The campgrounds in American Falls range in price from $12 to $26 per night as of April 2010. The least-expensive campground, the Power County Fairgrounds, offers sites for $12 per night. The fairgrounds do not have bath and shower facilities, however. Willow Bay Recreation Area and Massacre Rocks State Park offer sites that vary in price from $20 to $26 per night. Sites are less expensive during the week.

    Amenities

    • Willow Bay Recreation Area is the only RV campground in American Falls that offers sewer connections. All of the parks offer pull-through access for large RVs. None of the RV campgrounds offer wireless Internet. Massacre Rocks is a state park that offers a variety of hiking and biking trails, playgrounds and bath, shower and laundry facilities. Massacre Rocks also offers horseback riding for campers and visitors.

    Weather

    • Camping in American Falls requires extra layers of clothing about seven months of the year. The only months that the average temperature in American Falls gets above 50 degrees are May through September. Five months during the year, the average temperature in American Falls is below 38 degrees. There is plenty of snow in American Falls during the month of December, with an average of more than eight inches of precipitation.

    Attractions

    • American Falls is known for the American Falls Dam, located just a few miles north of the airport. In addition to the dam, the American Falls Reservoir offers visitors plenty of fishing, boating and swimming access. A vicious battle with Indians in the 19th century was memorialized with the naming of Massacre Rocks State Park in American Falls. The park offers visitors hiking, biking, boating, fishing and swimming opportunities. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is about a 30-minute drive from American Falls. Craters of the Moon features lava formations and wildlife formed from volcanic eruptions at the site.
