Lodging in Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina

Stone Mountain State Park, located in Roaring Gap, North Carolina, is made of 16 miles of trails, 20 miles of trout waters, and the 600-foot granite dome that is the highlight of the park. When you visit this natural wonder, you'll find many places to stay.
  1. Primitive Camping in the Park

    • Primitive camping gives nature enthusiasts a place where they can stay more connected to nature while they are taking a break from hiking the trails. There are no electricity hookups available in primitive camping facilities. Stone Mountain State Park has two primitive camping sites available to hikers and campers looking for a place to rest. The first is located in the Backpack Camping area. It has six primitive sites in this facility, which accommodates up to six people per site. Reservations are not required to stay here, but they are strongly recommended since the camp policy is "first come, first serve." The second primitive camping facility is located in the Group Campground. This area offers four sites that accommodate up to 25 people per site. Each site also includes a fire pit, a grill, and two picnic tables. Water and portable toilets are also located near the campsites for the convenience of campers. These sites require reservations before visiting the park. Both primitive camping facilities cost $12 per day, with an additional $1 per day per camper over groups of nine.

    Non-Primitive Camping in the Park

    • Some campers, on the other hand, still want the conveniences of modern life when they camp and rest after a long day of hiking trails and seeing the wildlife. At Stone Mountain State Park, there are two facilities that cater to the non-primitive camper. The first facility is in the Family Campground--A & C Loop. Here, there are 47 non-electric drive-to/walk-in campsites. Each site can handle up to six people per site and includes a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring for campers. The cost of each site is $18 per day. The second facility is in the Family Campground--B Loop. It has 41 drive-to/walk-in sites with both water and electric hookups. Each site can take up to six people per site and comes with a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring. It costs $23 per day. Located near both of the facilities are hot showers, drinking water, and an RV dump station. Neither of these facilities requires reservations, but both do recommend them strongly because of their "first come, first serve" policies.

    Lodging Just Outside the Park

    • For hikers who want to stay in something a bit bigger than a tent or an RV but still want to be in nature, there are cabins available very close to Stone Mountain State Park. The Cabin at Woodwind Hollow is located in Roaring Gap and is just two and a half miles from the state park. This two-story cabin has two bedrooms and one bath and can sleep up to four people. Included is a full kitchen with linens, towels, utensils, and a gas grill. The cabin also has a gated deck on the main floor and on the second floor a balcony with great views. There is also a study on the second floor with a study desk, bookcase, and rocking chair. The cost to stay is $100 per night, and the cabin is closely located to many natural wonders and modern conveniences.
