Campgrounds Near North Carolina Stone Mountain State Park

If you are looking for a day of adventure, head to North Carolina's Stone Mountain State Park in Roaring Gap. Stone Mountain, a dome of granite that measures 600 feet tall, is roughly three hours northwest of Raleigh and near the Blue Ridge Parkway. The park is ideal for activities from hiking to fly-fishing and when the day draws to a close, you can rest your head at one of the nearby campgrounds.
  1. Stone Mountain State Park

    • Stone Mountain State Park offers several different camping options. Try the two family campgrounds that are accessible by car or foot. The A&C Loop family campground has 47 sites while the B Loop Family Campground has 41. Each site has water and electric hook-ups, as well as picnic table, fire ring or grill, and a tent pad. A wash house with drinking water and hot showers is close to both as is a recreational vehicle (RV) dump station. The family campgrounds are available throughout the year.

      You can also opt for year-round primitive camping. One camping area has six sites which can accommodate up to six people per site. Keep in mind that there are no nearby amenities and that these sites are available on a first come, first serve basis.

      You can also choose one of the four primitive campsites that can accommodate up to 25 people per site. Each site has two picnic tables, grill, fire pit and is close to the port-a-potties. These sites are available year-round and reservations are required.

    New River Campground and Canoe Inc.

    • For varied camping options try New River Campground and Canoe in Sparta, less than 20 miles north of the park's back entrance in Sparta. Pitch your tent on one of their shaded and grassy tent sites complete with fire ring, lantern post and picnic table. You can also park your RV at one of the sites with electric and water hook-ups. If you prefer to camp inside, choose the camping cabin. Each cabin is a one room log cabin with a loft bed, two bunk beds, ceiling fan as well as a fire ring and picnic table. You will need to bring your own linens or sleeping bag and mattress for the cabin. The cabins are within walking access of the public bath houses. On-site amenities include a basketball court, kid's playground, and fishing and kayaking the nearby New River.

      New River Campground is open seven days a week from March to Labor Day. The exact opening and closing of the season do vary, so call before heading out. Reservations are strongly advised. Dogs that weigh less than 15 pounds are welcome to join you at the campground.

    Miller's Camping

    • For camping and story-telling, try Miller's Camping, just “100 yards from the Blue Ridge Parkway” and 21 miles to the northwest from the park's back entrance in Sparta. Set up your tent on the grass or opt for a platform. You can also park your RV on a site with full hook-up. Swim in the ponds, hike the property, or browse the Internet while sitting under their gazebo. Campers have access to the public bath house that features hot showers and laundry facilities. End the day at their fully-stocked country store to swap stories and join in one of their music jams.

      Miller's Camping season starts April 1 and stops October 31. Reservations can be made online at their website.
