Health is one reason some people prefer certain types of climate or weather above others. For example, someone who suffers from conditions that make it difficult to breath, such as tuberculosis, would prefer a dry, arid climate, such as the weather in Arizona, compared to a moist and humid climate that can be found in areas such as Louisiana and Florida. Another example is people who suffer from arthritis. Cold and damp conditions can cause different types of arthritis to flare-up and cause pain, so individuals with these types of conditions would also prefer warmer, drier climates.
The type of career you choose is another reason to choose a specific type of climate. Some careers require specific types of weather conditions. People who work as ski instructors, for example, would want to live in a mountainous area famous for large snowfalls, such as a Colorado or Vermont, whereas people who run a charter fishing boat would prefer a warm, tropical-type climate such as the weather in sunny California or Florida.
Some people prefer to live in an area that offers the type of recreational activities they enjoy. Those who enjoy skiing, snowboarding, ice-fishing and other winter sports would want to live in an area that is known to have long winters and plenty of snowfall. Others who enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, snorkeling, surfing or water skiing would want to live in a warmer region that has many lakes or is near the ocean and is known for long, hot summers.
Allergies are one more reason people may choose to live in a certain type of climate. Some parts of the country with tropical climates may have higher pollen counts and ozone levels, which can affect different types of allergies. Some people will even choose not to live in a particular climate due to the different pests and insects that also inhabit the area. Parts of the country with high levels of humidity tend to have more mosquitoes than other areas, as these pests will breed in areas of open water. Drier dessert climates are famous for housing pets such as scorpions and rattle snakes, which is often a deterrent for many people.
