What Are the AAA Diamond Ratings?

The American Automobile Association evaluates approximately 60,000 lodging establishments and restaurants. When making its evaluation, AAA rates establishments on a scale of one to five diamonds. One-diamond establishments meet AAA's basic standards for comfort, cleanliness, and hospitality. On the other end of the scale, a five-diamond rating means that AAA considers the lodging or restaurant to be a premier establishment. Any establishment may apply for a rating, at which time a AAA evaluation is completed through interviews and site visits.
  1. About AAA

    • Founded in 1902, AAA is an association of independent clubs that advocate for motorists and travelers. AAA lobbies the government for motorist rights and advocates for road safety, as well as the rights of travelers in the United States. AAA is a not-for-profit organization that also provides emergency road service, maps and travel publications. During AAA's 75th or diamond anniversary in 1977, the organization introduced its Diamond Rating System for lodging. In 1989, the ratings were expanded to include restaurants.

    Lodging Rating Criteria

    • Properties are evaluated on their cleanliness and condition, management style, exterior and public areas, guest rooms and guest bathrooms. Facilities directly associated with the property must be clean and well-maintained. The provision of fresh linens, maid services and bathroom supplies, as well as guestroom amenities such as furniture and window coverings are evaluated. Furnishings and amenities in bathrooms are also rated, with private bathrooms considered essential. The relationship between management and AAA, including management's cooperation in resolving AAA member complaints and facilitating AAA evaluations, is also rated. The conduct of staff, compliance with laws and availability of management is also evaluated.

    Lodging Diamond Ratings

    • One-diamond properties generally cater to budget travelers and provide no-frills accommodations that meet basic comfort, cleanliness and hospitality requirements. Establishments with two diamonds feature moderate prices with modest overall enhancements in the property's design and amenities. Three-diamond lodging appeal to travelers with comprehensive needs and offer marked physical upgrades in comparison with a high level of comfort and amenities. Four-diamond establishments offer upscale accommodations that are refined and stylish with a high degree of hospitality, service and attention to detail. Luxury accommodations are awarded the five-diamond rating. These proprieties pay close attention to service and comfort and offer personalized services and amenities.

    Restaurant Rating Criteria

    • Restaurants are rated according to cleanliness and condition, management style, and exterior and public areas. Establishments are evaluated based on whether they are clean and well-maintained and that food and beverage is of high quality and properly handled and stored. Restaurants are also evaluated on leisure and business travel needs, compliance with local, state and federal laws, and how staff conduct businesses. Each restaurant's management team is evaluated on their accessibility and their relationship with AAA members. Establishments are also rated on whether they have accurate and legible signage and adequate illumination in public areas.

    Restaurant Diamond Ratings

    • One diamond is assigned to restaurants that focus on basic food at economical prices. These restaurants meet basic requirements with respect to cleanliness, management and overall quality. Two-diamond ratings are awarded to relaxed, family fare restaurants offering noticeable enhancements to food presentation. Entry level fine dining restaurants are awarded three diamonds. These restaurants offer professional chefs and highly-trained cooks, and have menus that feature the latest trends or traditional cuisine specialities. Fine dining eateries receive four diamonds and generally offer distinctive experiences. Dishes are imaginative in presentation and ingredients, and the property's ambiance is refined and well-coordinated. A five-diamond rating is awarded to world-class dining establishments featuring fine ingredients and expert service staff.
