How to Travel on College Break

For many students, college breaks offer a time to get away, for a long weekend, a week, or even for a summer. Whether your destination is the beach, Mardi Gras, or a backpacking trip in Europe, there are some ideas to keep in mind so you can focus on having fun and gaining new experiences, rather than running into difficulties far from home.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a wallet or pouch that will not be a ready target for pickpockets. Pouches are available that will hang on a chain around your neck, or that wrap around your waist for wearing under your clothes.

    • 2

Leave all of your valuables at home. You won't need your grandfather's pocket watch on your trip, and that brand-new cashmere sweater will be fine waiting for you at home.

    • 3

Learn about any customs regarding clothing and etiquette in your destination, particularly if you are going overseas. Pack accordingly, and don't pack too much, even if you're heading just a few hours down to the beach.

    • 4

Plan on using your credit or debit card for most of your expenses. This way, you're not carrying around hundreds of dollars in cash. If you're going overseas, the credit card companies will get a better exchange rate on transactions than you will exchanging dollars. If you must carry some cash, convert dollars to traveler's checks before going abroad. Call your bank or credit card issuer to advise that you will be traveling out of the country; otherwise, your transactions could be declined because the card company might believe someone has stolen your card.

    • 5

Pack any prescription medication in your carry-on luggage, and carry documentation of your prescriptions with you so you can get more if you lose your medicine.

    • 6

Include a 110/220 voltage converter in your luggage for any electrical appliances you plan to carry, if you are traveling overseas. In other countries, the voltage used in their electrical outlets might fry your curling iron or hair dryer.
