How to Reduce Passport Processing Time

The regular passport processing time is about six to eight weeks. If you need a passport as soon as possible, your best option is to expedite the process. Although this entails much higher fees, the turnaround time for the service can be as fast as 24 hours to a few days. You can do this by hiring the service of a third-party passport expediting company duly registered at the U.S. Department of State's National Hand Courier Program.

Things You'll Need

  • Passport application form
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (original birth certificate or naturalization certificate)
  • Proof of identity (valid U.S. state-issued driver's license or government ID)
  • Two identical passport photos
  • Money for the payment of applicable fees

Choose the expediting process you want to use. As of December 2010, using the service of a regular passport agency requires an extra $60 payment for the expedited service, which typically gets your passport processed within two to three weeks. However, this projected processing time may be extended if the State Department gets swamped with too many applications at any given time.

If you don't want to encounter such risk, you may use a third-party expediting company for your passport application for an additional fee of about $100 to $180. This covers the service of the expediting company getting a coveted appointment at the passport office as soon as possible and the cost of the two-way overnight delivery of the passport application documents and the newly issued passport.

Fill out the passport application form. The form is available for download through the State Department's website Travel.state.gov, or you can get a copy from the expediting company.

    • 3

Attach two identical passport photos where noted in the form. Then prepare the documentary requirements including the original copy of your proof of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate or naturalization certificate) and copy of your proof of identity (U.S. state-issued driver's license or valid government ID).

    • 4

Pay the application and expedited processing fees. The available payment methods depend on your hired expediting company. The options typically include money order, personal check or credit card.

    • 5

Prepare the package and write "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the envelope if you choose a non-third-party type of expediting service---typically cutting the waiting period more than half the regular processing time of six to eight weeks. If using a third-party expediting company, submit all documents to the company either by mail or in person, according to the company's specific requirements.

    • 6

Wait for the issuance and mailing of your passport, according to the projected time period of your chosen service. If you have the choice to use your preferred courier, make sure you choose a traceable delivery method so you can easily check the status of your passport application.
