How to Fly With a Minelab Explorer Pro

The Minelab Explorer Pro is a sensitive adventure metal detector. Flying with a large object such as the Explorer Pro requires preparing it for the flight. Due to the size of the device, check it at the ticket counter and expect to pay an extra baggage fee, depending on the airline. Know the routine and pack it according to TSA and airline rules to avoid unwanted hassles as you take your trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack the Explorer Pro in a hard case with foam pieces or in a soft, padded travel bag. Leave the batteries in the Explorer Pro until check-in. If asked to turn the device on for security, you will be prepared with the batteries in place.

    • 2

Mark the case with your address, name, cell number and email. Measure the case and take its weight. Use this information on your airline's website to find the expected checked-bag fee. Some airlines allow one bag to be checked for free, whereas others have fees for all checked bags.

    • 3

Take the packed Explorer Pro to the check-in counter and tell the agent you need this bag checked. If asked to turn it on, do so. Once cleared, take the batteries out of the device and place them in the case.

    • 4

Staple (or ask the agent to staple) the bag-check ticket to your boarding pass. Do not lose. This ticket is used to retrieve your bag at the arrival airport. If the bag gets lost, the tag is needed to track the bag down or receive reimbursement.
