How to Fly With Dress Clothes

Traveling with dress clothing can be difficult. You don't want to arrive at your destination with wrinkled, crumpled clothing, especially if the items are expensive. Take simple steps to ensure that your dressy clothing arrives neatly, but keep in mind that you will likely need to iron or steam your clothing on arrival, no matter how carefully you pack. If you have an irreplaceable item such as a wedding dress or vintage suit, bring it on the plane with you rather than risk it getting lost or ruined in a suitcase.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out all of the items you need to pack for your trip and separate dress clothes from casual clothing.

    • 2

Roll your casual clothing and place everything in the suitcase, including shoes and toiletries. Leave your dress clothing for last.

    • 3

Place each item of dress clothing in a separate plastic dry cleaning bag and lay each bag on top of the rest of your clothing in the suitcase. Fold the dry cleaning bags in half if necessary.

    • 4

Purchase garment bag luggage if you travel with dress clothing frequently. These bags can be checked on a flight and folded in half to look like a suitcase, but extend flat to hang items such as dresses, suits and dress shirts.

    • 5

Hang valuable or delicate dresses or suits in a garment bag and carry this on the plane with you. Ask a crew member if she can hang it up in the front of the plane; otherwise, lay the garment bag flat in an overhead compartment. You could also fold the garment bag in half and place it on the seat next to you if it is unoccupied and if it is allowed by the airline.
