How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated and Hair Non-static While Flying

Flying on airplanes can dry your skin out and cause your hair to have some static-induced lift-off of its own. Staying hydrated and static-free while in the air is not as easy as it is on land, but being prepared before you board the plane will increase your chances of landing with moist and supple skin and a smooth, shiny mane. Packing the right tools before your flight is vital if you want to get to your destination looking your best.

Sip water during your flight. Refrain from sodas, alcohol and caffeinated beverages during your flight as these tend to dehydrate you. The same holds true for the hours before your flight. Juices are also a smart choice to keep you hydrated, especially fresh juices and citrus juices high in Vitamin C. Avoid juice cocktails since these are often full of high-fructose corn syrup.

Pack an emollient-rich moisturizer. Many deep-moisturizing or "overnight" lotions can be purchased at neighborhood stores at a price that fits within most budgets. Choose a moisturizer that contains shea butter, coconut oil or olive oil for rich moisturizing effects while in the air. Put some of your favorite lotion in a 3 ounce holder for travel.

Use a silicone-based hair polisher to tame static in your hair. Citreshine, John Freida and Smooth Shine are three brands worth checking out. Apply some to the hair during your normal styling routine, and bring along some for the flight as well to tame static-charged tresses in the lavatory before landing.

Pack a dryer sheet in your carry-on and smooth it over your hair if the levels of static get to extreme levels. Simply smooth the dryer sheet over medium-sized sections of the hair. Dampen the dryer sheet with a few drops of water to increase its effectiveness.
