How to Send a Package to the U.S. From Europe

While practically every European country is capable of easily sending a package to the United States, the price and convenience can greatly differ depending on your location. Generally speaking, the cost of sending a package to the U.S. is expensive; the price of a modest box of clothes sent from Spain, for instance, cost 55 euros or $77 as of 2010. While certain countries may have different regulations when it comes to providing boxes for international shipment, the condition of most packages once they reach the U.S. are generally poor and therefore limit the likelihood of fragile items making the voyage.

Things You'll Need

  • Items you intend to ship
  • Box of desired size
  • Packaging tape
  • Black Sharpie
  • Euros of sufficient quantity
  • Package stuffing (optional)
  • Translator or foreign language dictionary (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Pack your box securely and tightly in order to economically condense the package. Secure any fragile items in the center of the box where they will be surrounded by a buffer of clothes, fabrics or any softer items. Insert package stuffing if desired.

    • 2

Fold the corners of the box until the lid is tightly closed. Ensure that no bulges appear in the box and begin applying packaging to all corners, edges and faces of the box. Liberally apply the packaging tape to help secure the package as much as possible.

    • 3

Write the address that you are sending from on the top-left corner of the package face with the Sharpie, and write the address that you are sending to in the direct center of the package face. Remember to write USA after the city, state and Zip code.

    • 4

Walk to your nearest post office (most European cities have one every few blocks) and ask if the facility is capable of sending a package internationally to the United States. If it is not, ask for directions to the nearest post office that can help you. Use the help of a translator or foreign language dictionary as necessary.

    • 5

Weigh the package and receive the cost of postage. Pay the post office and ask the clerk to further secure the package further with special tape or protective casing. Purchase tracking on your package in order to track its progress online.
