When visiting Italy you may purchase items that are too large to fit into your travel luggage. In order to skip out on large airline fees for bringing in additional bags it is often cheaper to send the item back to your home address. If you mail out the package a few days before you are set to depart you, more than likely, are going to make it home before the package. Thankfully, Italy, like most other European countries, has a very reliable mail system so there is no need to worry about your package.
Add extra padding and tape to your package. Because your box is going to sit in the bottom of an airplane for hours at a time, bouncing to all the turbulence, it is extremely important to add extra padding to the interior of the package (such as packing peanuts or bubble wrap). You also want to thoroughly apply tape around the box to close it off to protect it from opening during its trip over seas.
Stop by a local post office in Italy. Your package is going to arrive faster if you stop by a post office in a major city, although it is going to arrive eventually, no mater where you mail the package from. It is also possible to stop by an international shipping location (such as UPS) if you want to skip the post office. These services are typically quicker than using the mail.
Print out your full, International address (include "USA" at the bottom of the address).
Hand the package over to the attendant working at the post office. Pay the shipping rate for an International package (it is going to vary depending on the weight and how far it is traveling). Once paid for, the necessary stamps are placed on the package and it is ready for shipment.
