How to Send Parcels Overseas

Mailing a package internationally is a whole different ball game than mailing from one state to another. There are regulations in place that require you to fill out forms declaring the value of its contents, and costs can be many times higher than domestic shipping. Packages must clear customs before they can be delivered. In many cases, food and drink cannot be shipped, as countries want to keep certain organisms from growing within their borders.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what shipping method you would like to use. The United States Post Office will ship packages overseas, but private couriers can be a quicker option for time-sensitive items.

    • 2

Securely pack your items with bubble wrap and wadded-up newspaper for padding. There should be no rattling when the package is shaken. Secure the box with packing tape. Make sure the package does not exceed certain couriers' size limits, such as DHL's 30 kg weight limit and 60-by-60-by-120 cm size limit.

    • 3

Write the name and address of the recipient on the largest face of the box with a waterproof pen or marker.

    • 4

Fill out a customs declaration form. There are three different forms to fill out, depending on the type and value of your package. You can find forms 2976 and 2976-A on the United States Pose Office website (see Resources), and you must visit a post office to get form 6182.

    • 5

Sign the customs form and bring the package to the post office or courier. Pay the shipping and import fees, along with any optional insurance you opt for, and your package will be on its way to the recipient.
