List of Banned Items on Airlines

When flying, there are basic safety requirements that must be met by each passenger. The security measures are set in place in order to keep every passenger safe. Every airline has to follow the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) guidelines for what can and cannot be brought on an airplane. It is important to know what items are banned on an airplane beforehand in order to prevent any problems at security checkpoints.

  1. Sharp Objects

    • The TSA currently does not allow any sharp objects as a carry on item on the airplane. This includes knives, box cutters, razors, ice picks or ice axes, scissors, swords and meat cleavers. If the item is used for cutting something, it is safe to assume it will not be allowed as a carry on item. If these items are in the baggage that is being checked in, then it can go on the airplane. Make sure to wrap the sharp object well in order to prevent it from cutting open the baggage and possibly hurting a baggage handler.

    • Sporting good equipment are another item that is banned as a carry-on item on airlines. Baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, ski equipment, pool cues and bows and arrows are all prohibited. These items are also allowed to be checked in with baggage.

    Guns and Firearms

    • Guns and firearms are prohibited from airlines. If they are attempted to be brought on an airline, it can lead to an immediate arrest. Ammunition, fire arms, compressed air guns, flare guns, pellet guns and realistic replicas of firearms are all banned items, It is important to check with the specific airline beforehand to see if they allow guns and firearms to be checked in with baggage.

    Tools

    • Screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers all need to be less than 7 inches in length in order to be carried on an airplane. Hammers, saws, crowbars, axes and drills all have to be checked in. Tools also have to be wrapped well in a bag in order to prevent damage.

    Flammable Items

    • Aerosol, gas, lighter fluid and lighters are also prohibited as carry-on items. If a lighter does not have lighter fluid in it, then it can be carried on. Matches are only permitted if they are the non-strike anywhere matches.

    Other Items

    • There are also some miscellaneous items that cannot be taken on airlines as carry on items. Gel candles and gel show inserts are not allowed as carry on items. They need to be checked in beforehand. Non-flammable liquid (shampoos, mouthwash, etc.) can be carried on as long as they is less than 3.4 ounces.
