Night Clubs in Palermo, Sicily

Palermo is the capital of Sicily, which many of us remember from grade school geography (it's the island Italy's "boot" is kicking). Sicily has been conquered and occupied by at least four major empires in its nearly 3,000-year history. As a result, its capital city is a cultural melting pot. Arabian, Roman, Byzantine and Bourbon—you’ll find remnants of each bygone empire in the food, literature and culture of Palermo. When it comes to nightlife, you’ll have your choice of dance clubs, lounges and good old-fashioned pubs with live music.

  1. I Candelai

    • This rock-inspired dance club is one of Palermo’s most popular night spots. Open since 1996, the club specializes in live indie rock and new wave music, as well as bass-pumping DJ sets. Because the club is part of a larger I Candelai cultural center and performing arts venue, there’s always something going on during the week, from installation art to plays to folk art displays. Programs and events are announced in advance on the I Candelai website, along with start time and cover charge.
In January 2010, highlights of I Candelia’s schedule included a live performance by Omosumo, the “Sunglasses After Dark” psychedelic jungle DJ set, and the Festa 800A Records live event.

    Malox

    • This bar-pub doubles as a live performance venue, especially when the weather is nice. Situated beside a piazza, the outdoor seating lets you watch people as you sip your beer or cocktail. Jazz musicians and Italian indie rock groups will often wait outside until there’s a crowd large enough to perform for. The atmosphere is decidedly informal, accentuated by the happy hour drink specials. Although this venue has no website of its own, you can check out the Travel Channel's guide to Palermo to find out more. It's resident travel savant, Anthony Bourdain, filmed an episode of his show in Sicily, resulting in excellent coverage for the capital city on its website.

    Il Moro

    • In Italian, “Il Moro” means “the Moor.” This club is a nod to Sicily’s Arabian conquerors, and the theme is carried through in the Eastern-influenced décor. From carpets to cushions to smoky, flickering candles, this is an upscale place designed for a more intimate night than a rowdy evening at I Candelai. It’s located on the Arenella seashore, and the two floors offer your choice of music. Based on your mood, you can choose from global chillout (think Buddha Bar), Latin or house/dance/trance. If you sit outside, you can snack on fresh-baked pizza as you watch the waves roll into shore.
