How to Get to Giza Pyramids From Downtown Cairo

The Great Pyramids of Giza are located west of downtown Cairo, Egypt. As one of the most visited tourist sites, the pyramids are easy to access when for those traveling around Cairo. When you reach the main Pyramids Road, travel west until you see the pyramids. As this is a hefty walk in Egyptian heat, some people prefer the convenience of a cab ride. However, less expensive and more interesting transportation options are possible to get from the east bank of the Great Nile River to the West bank for sightseeing and photographing the Egyptian wonders.

      Decide when you wish to arrive at the Giza Pyramids and arrange your travel accordingly. By bus, you'll travel from the heart of the city to the suburb of Giza. The trip from downtown to the Giza Plateau can take from 20 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day.

      Get to the main bus station downtown located at Midan Abdel Moniem Riad. Look for the buses going westbound to Giza, Sharia-al-Haram, the Great Pyramid of Khufu or the Sphynx. Board the bus for your ride and pay your one-way fare.

      Choose another route by taking the Maspero River Bus. This terminal is at the Radio & TV tower located just north of the October Bridge and Egyptian Museum. River buses leave at 15-minute intervals from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. The boat trip is 50 minutes long with four stops, including the Giza pyramids and costs 50 pt.

      Arrive at Sharia-al-Haram, the extension of Pyramids Road at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu. This is the current main entrance. From the roundabout at the base of the plateau, take the tarmacked road up the plateau toward the pyramids. Look for the ticket hut functioning as a temporary office on your right to pay your entrance fees.
