How to See a Moonbow at Cumberland Falls, Kentucky

Corbin, Kentucky, is the proud home of two national tourist attractions: the first Kentucky Fried Chicken and one of the only frequent moonbow view areas in the world. Situated within the Daniel Boone National Forest in Southwestern Kentucky sits Cumberland Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the United States. Here is one of only two places in the world where a colorful refraction of moonlight, also called a moonbow, can be seen on a monthly basis. If you have this site in your traveling plans, keep in mind that several conditions must be met before a moonbow will appear.

Find the moonbow schedule at the Kentucky State Parks website. This lists the dates each year that you can view a moonbow due to a full moon. Choose one of those dates to visit Cumberland Falls.

Watch the weather forecast. If the sky is cloudy, you can count on not seeing a moonbow. Wind and fog can also affect the vibrancy of a moonbow. The best weather for seeing the most colorful moonbow is a cool, crisp night in fall or winter.
