The Narrow Gauge Railroad is a historic steam engine train which has been running since 1882. Originally, this train route was built to transport silver and gold from the San Juan Mountains. It travels 52 miles from Durango to Silverton and back. This scenic train ride runs through the mountains and canyons, offering breathtaking views of the wildlife and natural forest between the two cities, in places that are not accessible by any other means. Customers can choose first class with its oversized seats, deluxe class with a roomy open observation gondola, or standard class, which seats three per row.

The Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum features exhibits and detailed information about the life and culture of the Ute tribe, which inhabited the area before European settlers. Visitors can see actual photographs of the natives who lived there and get a realistic sense of their way of life.

A visit to Mesa Verde National Park is a must for anyone traveling through the Durango, Colorado area, especially those who are interested in the history and culture of years past.
