    Dunbrody Abbey

    • Founded in 1170, Dunbrody Abbey is considered to be one of the best examples of Cistercian monastic architecture in Ireland. The abbey was constructed on Hook Peninsula at the behest of Herve de Montmorency following the Norman invasion of Ireland. It took approximately 50 years to complete and was an active place of prayer and retreat for nearly 300 years until 1542, when the lands and holdings changed hands and came into the possession of the Etchingham family, who kept the land in trust until 1911. The site is comprised of the abbey, a yew-hedge maze used in walking prayer, a tea room and a craft center. It is open daily from early May until mid-September. Guided tours are available with advance notice.
