The city embraces the holiday, offering a wide variety of seasonal activities in addition to the simple pleasure of seeing London dressed up in twinkling lights and greenery. 1. Christmas at Kew

    • Kew Gardens is one of London's most popular open-space attractions, and this is especially true during the winter holidays. Christmas at Kew is an ongoing event during the holiday season, open from early December to early January. Tours of the gardens focus on the coniferous and evergreen trees on the grounds, horse and carriage rides are offered, the Kew Gardens gift shop has extended hours and kids can visit with Santa Claus for free. A carousel and other children's rides are offered, as well as face painting and a large, interactive playground. Although there is an admission cost to the garden, most Christmas activities are free, although the horse and carriage rides cost a nominal fee. The Gardens are closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Medieval Christmas at the Tower of London

    • The Tower of London has stood on the banks of the River Thames since the 11th century and has been a fortress, prison and a palace during its long history. Today, it is a popular visitor attraction and home to the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. At Christmastime, the tower is transformed into a living historical park and family amusement attraction showing life in the medieval period, particularly how Christmas was celebrated. The Merry Medieval Christmas takes visitors back to the reign of King Edward I in 1284. They can join in traditional medieval revelry with court jesters, musicians and storytellers. Historical reenactors bring the era to life and answer questions. An ice skating rink is also available for visitors in the tower's moat. Tickets can be booked in advance on the Tower of London website, and early booking is encouraged.

    Natural History Museum Ice Rink

    • Ice skating is a favorite pastime of Londoners during the holiday season, and by far the most popular rink in the city is found at the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. The nearly 11,000-square-foot rink is set in the museum's spectacular grounds, which are lit by thousands of lights during Christmas. Junior and baby rinks also are available for younger skaters, with aides on hand to assist kids. The museum cafe overlooks the rink and serves hot drinks and snacks, as well as being a great vantage point to watch the skaters. Tickets are available that include access to both the museum and the rink.
