Things to Do in Playa De Las Americas

Playa de las Americas is a vacation resort located on the southern end of the island Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands. Situated off the coast of northwestern Africa, Playa de las Americas was developed in the 1960s as a tourist destination. The town is very popular with European travelers especially, with its ideal climate offering sun, sea and sand all year long. Vacationers can enjoy the beaches, the amusement-packed promenade, water park, outstanding nightlife and shopping bargains.
  1. Beaches

    • Playa de las Americas has three natural and three man-made beaches. The natural beaches have native dark volcanic sand, while the man-made beaches feature a lighter shade of sand shipped in from Africa. Water activities include swimming, jet skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving and boating. Along the waterfront promenade are restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs and other entertainment.

      Boating excursions are available to take tourists on day trips to see dolphins and whales. Vacationers can chose from motor boats, catamarans, sailboats and glass bottom boats for pleasure cruises. Spotted, common and bottlenose dolphins may be seen are, and sightseers can also spot fin, sperm and pilot whales.

    Aqualand

    • Head over to Aqualand for even more water activities. The large park features water slides, rides, diving boards and pools. Children will enjoy the Mini Park, with a pirate ship and castle to explore. For a lazy, relaxing ride, check out the Congo River, where vacationers can float down a slow-moving river. Don't miss the Dolphinarium, where trained dolphins show off their tricks. There are also shops and restaurants when you need to dry out.

      Make sure to bring flip flops as the park flooring can be hot.

    Nightlife

    • Playa de las Americas' streets are full of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and cafes. The Veronicas strip, the Starco Commercial Centre and the Patch are the most popular areas for evening entertainment. Clubgoers party all night long at places like Tramps, O'Neill's and Brannigans, enjoying live music, dancing, celebrity impersonators and cabarets.

      Kids will find plenty to do at night in Playa de las Americas, with amusement arcades, bowling and family-friendly shows.

    Shopping

    • Playa de las Americas offers some fine shopping opportunities. There's duty-free shopping for items like cigarettes, perfume and electronics. Thursdays and Saturdays feature the Torviscas Market, which opens at 10 in the morning. Torviscas is a great place to buy souvenirs and gifts. Don't be afraid to haggle with the shopkeepers at Torviscas as they drive a hard bargain. Come early to avoid crowds. Then hop over to Santa Cruze, Tenerife's capital, located just an hour away, for designer shopping.
