Things to Do in Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon is located in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, east of San Joaquin Valley and Fresno in central California. Kings Canyon National Park and adjoining Sequoia National Park are home to some of the world's largest trees such as the 3,000-year-old General Grant sequoia which rises 268 feet and is 28 feet in diameter at its widest point. You can't see Kings Canyon in a day, so plan to stay awhile.
  1. Getting There

    • To get to Kings Canyon National Park, take Highway 99, then turn east on Highway 180. This route takes about 1 1/2 hours from Fresno. You can also enter Kings Canyon by way of the Grant Grove entrance at Sequoia National Park by taking Highway 99 to Highway 198. Allow one hour travel time from Visalia. The Generals Highway is the main road that connects the two parks. There are no entrances on the east side of the parks. Both entrances are accessible all year, weather permitting.

Fuel up before you enter the park because there are no services inside Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks. Remember to drive with caution once you enter the park. The roads are steep and narrow and have many sharp, winding curves.

Snow can fall unexpectedly at any time of the year on The Generals Highway. Be prepared with a set of tire chains and emergency supplies such as water, food and blankets.

    Park Fees

    • You can purchase a seven-day pass that allows access to Sequoia-Kings Canyon and the Hume Lake District of Sequoia National Forest for $20 per vehicle; or $10 per person if you arrive on foot, bicycle, motorcycle or on a bus. A 12-month pass for all passengers in a private vehicle is a bargain at $30.

    When to Visit

    • Kings Canyon National Park is open 24 hours a day, year-round. July and August are the hottest and busiest months of the year. If you are planning to camp, this may not be the best time for your visit.

Mid-September through November is beautiful. Aspen trees in autumn colors decorate the landscape. It is the least-crowded season; however, be advised sudden storms and snow are possible during this time period.

Few campgrounds are open during the winter months, from November through mid-April. The Generals Highway is also subject to closure after winter storms pass through. If you are planning a trip in winter, it is best to call ahead for the latest weather information.

Mid-April through June is the best time to see wildflowers in bloom in the lower elevations of Kings Canyon. Deep snow may still be present in higher elevations of the Sierras in spring. Don't attempt to cross rivers that are raging during this time of year.

    Points of Interest

    • Get a grandiose view of Kings Canyon's "U" shape from Canyon Viewpoint, 1 mile east of Cedar Grove Village.

Off Highway 180, inside Kings Canyon Valley, about 3 miles east of Cedar Grove Village is a parking area where you can access a paved trail that leads you to Roaring River Falls, a rushing 40-foot waterfall that cascades through granite formations. Where the highway ends, numerous trails lead farther into the wilderness. Access a 4-mile trail here to see Mist Falls--considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kings Canyon.

Located in the heart of Kings Canyon National Park is the Kings River and Zumwalt Meadow. You can take a 1.5-mile self-guided trail through this area of the park to enjoy views of mountains such as the Grand Sentinel. Be on the lookout for deer that are often spotted in this area. Park 4 miles east of the Cedar Grove Village turnoff to access the trail.

    Exercise Caution

    • Whether hiking, camping or having a picnic in Kings Canyon National Park, you should be aware that this is bear country. Bears have a good sense of smell, so always store your food, personal items and garbage in metal containers provided by the park. Never approach a bear. If cubs are present, mother bears may be especially aggressive. Report sightings to park rangers. Taking added precautions will allow you to have a safe and enjoyable trip.
