How to Pack Produce to Ship

Despite an emphasis many people place on eating locally, much of what we eat travels thousands of miles to get to our plate. Packing produce properly ensures that it will arrive at its destination in prime condition, looking as though it was just picked from your garden or orchard.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the healthiest produce to ship. Bad spots on fruit and vegetables can become worse en-route, causing the receiver to open a nasty smelling package.

    • 2

Line the shipping crate with tissue paper for protection. This can prove helpful if contents shift or are dropped in transit.

    • 3

Place solid fruits and vegetables like bananas, apples, potatoes and cucumbers directly into the box or crate.

    • 4

Wrap more delicate produce, such as heads of lettuce, in special produce bags. These bags allow the produce to "breathe," lengthening shelf life. Then place the heads of lettuce inside the crate.

    • 5

Secure the lid to the box or crate. Use packing tape to ensure the lid stays on during transit.

    • 6

Take the crate to your local post office or other shipping provider. Advise the representative of the dimensions of your package and act on his recommendations. Your container will likely need to be weighed before it can be shipped.
