Requirements for a Photo ID

Having a state issued photo identification card is important in today's society. You need ID to travel, work, shop and to prove your identity. You can get an ID card from your local Department of Motor Vehicles. Requirements vary depending on the type of ID you are looking to get. There are three types of ID cards you can apply for: original, replacement or renewed. Although the fees required to pay in order to obtain ID varies from state to state, there are a few basic documents taken by every local U.S. Department of Motor Vehicles.
  1. Original ID Card

    • Because of long lines, you will want to arrive early.

      When obtaining an original ID card you must apply in person. Because you are requesting an new card, they will ask for a lot of different original or certified copies of identifying documents. You will need to provide proof of citizenship, date of birth, your full legal name, residency and social security number.

    Replacement ID Card

    • A lost or stolen wallet can often contain photo ID cards.

      If your photo ID card is lost or stolen, you will want to have it replaced as soon as possible. The requirements for replacement photo ID cards are not as demanding. You will need proof of your name, citizenship, date of birth and social security number. But if you have recently changed your name, or have moved, you will need to bring the appropriate documents with that updated information.

    Renewed ID Card

    • A passport is proof of identity.

      When your card expires you must get it renewed. In order to renew your card you need proof of name, citizenship, date of birth and social security number. You will also need to provide documents of any changes in name or residency.
