Decide on the days you would like to have your mail stopped and then reinstated. If you are going on a trip, then you want the mail to stop the first day you will not be able to check your box. You will want your mail reinstated on the first day you will be home from your trip.
Visit holdmail.usps.com to access the on-line form needed to stop your mail delivery for a period of 3 to 30 days.
Enter your five digit zip code in the dialog box presented on the right side of the screen on the Hold Mail page.
Proceed to the next page and then enter your name, mailing address and phone number. The city and state are automatically filled in based on your zip code.
Verify that your information is correct on the next page of the Hold Mail form before hitting continue. Sometimes the USPS will provide you with an "official address" that features the street address of your home as it is in their system. It is always best to go with the USPS provided version.
Plug-in the dates you have selected for your mail hold within the form. If your information is provided by 2:00 a.m., the mail delivery for the same day can be stopped. Otherwise there is a delay of one business day.
Select whether the post office should hold your accumulated mail for pick-up when you return, or if they should deliver it all to your address on the day the mail hold is lifted. You can also enter additional instructions for your postmaster or letter carrier before continuing.
Check the information presented on the next screen and verify that every detail is correct. If the information is correct, click 'Submit' to officially hold your mail delivery.
