How to Stop Mail for a Week

If you are planning to leave your home for an extended period of time -- perhaps for a vacation -- you could return to find mail spilling out of your mailbox. To help customers avoid this inconvenience, the United States Postal Service allows people to have their mail held. By going online, you can stop mail deliveries and have them held at your local post office for pickup or to be delivered on the date of your choosing.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a web browser and navigate to the USPS homepage. Once there, click the heading at the top of the page that reads "All Products & Services." On the next page, you will see a list of services, including a link that reads "Put Your Mail on Hold." Click it and have your dates ready.

    • 2

Type your ZIP code in the box under "Create a Request" and click "Go."

    • 3

Type your address, name and phone number using the appropriate boxes under "Address Information" and click "Continue." The screen changes to display a confirmation of your contact information. Click "Continue" again.

    • 4

Click the "Begin Date" and "Resume Date" drop-down menus and select the dates on which you would like the USPS to stop delivering your mail and begin delivering it again.

    • 5

Select an option under "Delivery Options" to indicate whether you would like the postal service to deliver all of the mail accumulated at the post office on the "Resume Date," or pick the mail up yourself.

    • 6

Click the "Continue" button to submit your order to stop mail deliveries.
