How to Forward Mail to a Changed Address

Whether you're leaving your old residence for good or just temporarily, you'll need to fill out a USPS change of address form so the USPS will automatically forward your mail to your new address. Although never seeing another bill might sound like a good idea, your creditors probably won't be too thrilled if you don't fill out a change of address form. Once you fill out the form, you should start receiving mail at your new address in about a week.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the online change of address form (see Resources). Click the orange "Click here to begin" button.

    • 2

Select either "Permanent" or "Temporary" for your change of address. Select "Temporary" if you do not plan on living at the new address for more than 12 months. Click "Continue."

    • 3

Click the text box next to "Start forwarding on." Select a date for the USPS to begin forwarding your mail. Click "Continue."

    • 4

Select whether you want the mail forwarding to affect yourself, your family or your business. Click "Continue."

    • 5

Enter your name exactly as it appears on your mail, your old address, new address and your email address. Click "Continue." If you are addressed by multiple names, you must fill out a change of address form for each name.

    • 6

Fill out your credit card information. USPS charges $1.00 for each change of address form you submit. Ensure that your name matches what is on your credit card. Choose the address that's associated with your credit card and click the checkbox next to "I verify."

    • 7

Click "Submit." USPS will inform you that your change of address was successful, as long as the information was correctly submitted. Check your email for a confirmation email as well.
