How to Address Foreign Letters From the U.S. to Go to Canada

Outgoing mail from the United States to Canada is considered international mail. Despite its location directly north of the United States, Canada is a foreign country. Mailing letters or packages between the two countries requires following the same rules as mailing a letter to your grandmother in another state. The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) provides detailed information regarding sending international mail.

Instructions

    • 1

Package your mail in appropriate packaging. Letters go in envelopes and large items go in boxes. The USPS asks that you do not attempt to send anything breakable in any type of envelope and that you package breakable and/or fragile items with extra padding.

Print your address in the upper left corner of the box or envelope. The USPS prefers you print in all capital letters, but it is not required. Your address should be written in the following format:

      Your Name

Your Street Address/Post Office Box Address

Your City, State and Zip Code

Print the Canadian destination address in the middle of the envelope or package. Make sure your destination address is written correctly, otherwise there is a chance it will not make it to your destination. Your Canadian mailing address should be printed in the following format:

      Recipient's Name

      Recipient's Street/Post Office Box Address

Recipient's City, Province and Zip Code

Mail your envelope or package with the appropriate amount of postage attached. You can mail your envelopes by putting them in your mailbox with the red flag in the upright position, by putting it in any USPS blue mailbox or by dropping it off at your local post office. Boxes can be picked up by any shipping company, dropped off with any shipping company or mailed at your local post office.
