How to Setup Mail Forwarding

For a brief vacation, it makes sense to put a temporary hold on mail delivery. However, when you are away from home for an extended period of time or moving to a new address, it is important not to have a break in your mail service. Using the United States Postal Service website, you can easily have standard mail forwarded to your new location. The postal service allows the option of temporary forwarding of up to six months or permanent mail forwarding.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the United States Postal Service website (see Resources). Click the orange "Click Here to Begin" button.

    • 2

Choose between the permanent or temporary forwarding option, and enter the date you would like the postal service to start forwarding your mail. If you chose to temporarily forward your mail, enter the date you would like the forwarding to end. Click "Continue."

    • 3

Select whether the change of address applies to an individual, family or business. Only select the family option if everyone in the household has the same last name and everyone is moving to the same new address. Click "Continue."

    • 4

Enter your full name or the name of your business, your old address, new address and email address. Click "Continue."

    • 5

Complete the form, filling in your credit or debit card information and phone number. Check the box acknowledging that you reviewed the "Your Information" box on the right side of the page and that you understand your card will be charged $1 for processing. Click "Submit."
