According to Niagara Parks, the falls are a legacy of the last Ice Age. The Niagara Peninsula became free of the ice about 12,500 years ago. After the ice melted, the original Niagara Falls were created.
The Niagara Falls are made up of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Below is the Niagara River, a channel connecting two of the five Great Lakes, Erie and Ontario.
Boat, helicopter and bus tours are available. In addition, there are several museums, state parks, nature trails, festivals and other attractions in the Niagara region.
Famous visitors to the falls include Drew Barrymore, Marilyn Monroe and Christopher Reeve. In addition, Charles Dickens and Mark Twain have written about the falls.
Temperatures are chilly from November through March, with averages of -6 degrees C and 4 degrees C (21 degrees F and 39 degrees F), and snow is likely.
Warmer temperatures prevail in June through August, with average highs of 26 degrees C (79 degrees F) and lows of 15 degrees C (59 degrees F). Even on warm days, however, the falls keep temperatures cool; visitors should expect to get wet from the mist the wind picks up.
