Most children take advantage of the free kids' clubs offered on board virtually every ship. Their days will be filled with active play, so pack clothes that can get dirty. Swimming is a big part of the fun, so pack at least two swimsuits.
If your daughter will dine with you at night, bring a simple skirt or pants and a few nice blouses. Most ships offer two formal nights per week, but small children do not need to go all out. A church or party dress will look just fine.
Pre-teen girls can be the most difficult to pack for, as they generally want to look nice but stay active. Choose shorts and pants in dark colors that can be worn more than once. Many girls this age are unwilling to wear shirts more than once, so pack tank tops and small shirts that do not take up much room.
Pre-teen girls are often excited about dinner and evening activities, and want to follow the dress code to the hilt. Choose lightweight skirts in wrinkle-resistant fabrics and matching shells. Teach your daughter to mix and match outfits.
Most teenage girls take charge of their own packing, but without supervision they may be tempted to take an entire closet. Resist the urge to pack for your teenage daughter, which will just lead to arguments. Instead, make sure she knows the dress codes for each activity, the size and weight limits for luggage, and current airport security restrictions. Use the opportunity to teach your daughter about multiple-use clothing items, and how to create new outfits by accessorizing with scarves or jewelry.
Sunscreen is absolutely required. The sun's rays reflect off the ocean, the swimming pools, and even the highly polished railings along the decks.
Girls who have begun to menstruate should carry a small supply of their favorite feminine products. Some items are sold on board, but they are expensive and only a few brands are available.
Encourage your daughter to bring a book or two, and perhaps an MP3 player. Although there are activities around the clock, she may want to spend some time just lying out by the pool.
If you will visit religious buildings in port, shorts and tanks may not be permitted. Bring appropriate clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
Pack rain gear and a jacket, even on warm weather itineraries. Rain is frequent in many ports, and public areas on ships are often chilly.
