Exploring the mountain trails is very exciting. You will cross creeks, jump logs, climb rocky terrain, slide down steep banks or just dust up the trails. You never know what you will run into so you want to be ready for the unexpected. I have put thousands of miles in the hills and I think I have run into every obstacles you can imagine.

It is best if you go with friends because you really don't want to go alone. To start with you will need a cargo bag to strap on your ATV. If you get one big enough you can pack in a lot of items. Some light duty tie straps will hold the bag in place. A first aid kit should be loaded last for easy accessibility. Some times a limb might hit you on the arm or face so you will need to cover and protect it from infection.

Many times you will run across a tree in your path, some are to big to go over if you cannot go around it. This is where a tow strap comes in handy. Secure one end around the smallest end of the tree if possible and pull it out of your way. Once, a rider tried to cross over a dead tree in his path and got stuck. We had to pull him off with the strap. You can also tow someone who has broke down or stuck in the mud. A 20 foot heavy duty flat strap with hooks on the ends will fit into the tool compartment of your ATV.

You will not want to miss the chance to get that perfect picture. A camera is a must. You might find water falls, old homesteads, creeks, rock formations, Fall colored leaves, or just to remember the trip.

Basic tools, tire repair kit and air pump. A hand pump will work fine because most of the tires require 5 lbs of air pressure. I have a 12 volt model since there is a utility plug for 12 volt items. A pair of hand loppers for getting some limbs out of your path and a small hand saw for the larger limbs. The shovel is handy if you plan on roasting some wieners or taking a hasty trip into the woods. Don't forget the T.P.

A gallon of water is important. Snacks for when you take a break, cheese crackers, beef jerky or mix nuts. Pack a lunch. There is nothing like taking a break and enjoying the beauty. I pack a collapsible cooler. It rides better than the hard ones.

Beware of the wildlife. Most all the animals will run from you. There is always that chance of one looking for food. Just keep on riding.

When crossing water, check the depth with a stick. You can drown out your machine.

If you don't have a guide and are new to the area, mark the trails with some ribbon or take along a GPS. Walkie talkies are handy. Gloves will help your hands from all day gripping. Winter wear for when it is cold, Thicker gloves will help the wind chill from freezing your hands. A rain suit will keep you dry or protect you from the cold wind.
