Arrange for transportation to the island. There is a private concessionary that runs to the island twice a day in the summer and once a day in the winter.
Plan to camp on the island for a maximum of seven days.
Be sure to bring your boots if you plan on exploring Cumberland Island's 50 miles of hiking trails. Note that bicycles are not allowed on the ferry.
Bring everything you'll need with you. There are no stores or services on the island, and the ferry cannot be used to re-supply campers.
Pack out all trash.
Use the designated walking trails on the dunes.
