How to Adjust Your Photo to Passport Restrictions

Not just any photo is acceptable for use on a United States passport, according to the U.S. Department of State. The easiest way to ensure your photo is acceptable is to have it taken at a Passport Acceptance Facility or other location that specializes in passport photos. This doesn't mean that you can't take your own passport photo. But if you plan to use your own photo, you must make sure it meets State Department restrictions.

Wear an appropriate outfit in your passport photo, which means everyday attire. According to the U.S. Department of State, uniforms aren't considered appropriate for passport photos, but religious attire that is worn daily is acceptable. You may not wear a hat, any headgear or non-prescription glasses.

Pose for your passport photo as close as possible to the date you apply for your passport. Photos that are more than six months old aren't accepted by the State Department.

Face the camera head-on for your passport photo. Take your photo while standing against a white or off-white background.

Size your photo correctly. It must be exactly 2 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The acceptable length from your chin to the top of your head must be between 1 and 1 3/8 inches, according to the State Department.

Print your photo. Passport photos must be printed in color and on thin photo paper, which can be found in any office supply store.
