German Entry Requirements for Australian Passport Holders

Australia enjoys a solid relationship with Germany, described by the German Embassy in Sydney as "firmly founded on shared values," where "cooperation is trustful." Because of this mutual trust and cooperation, Australians enjoy easy, visa-less access to Germany for certain tourism and business visits as well as additional opportunities for longer tourist stays to promote cultural exchange. Visiting Germany can give Australians a chance to experience a place from which many Australian settlers originated.
  1. Stays of Less than Three Months

    • Australian passport holders are not required to obtain visas to enter Germany for a period of 90 days or less, whether as a tourist or on business, provided they do not intend to work in Germany.

    Working-Holiday Visas

    • Australians aged 18 to 30 can apply for Working-Holiday Visas, the purpose of which is to allow a cultural exchange between Germans and Australians. This visa allows the Australian visitor to come to Germany primarily as a tourist for an extended period of up to 12 months. The visa holder may find employment to help finance the stay, as long as he also continues to travel.

    Spouses of German Citizens

    • If an Australian citizen intends to enter Germany as the spouse of a German, she must take a test that proves competency in basic German when applying for the spousal visa.

    Working in Germany

    • Australian citizens are among a small handful of foreign nationals allowed to apply for German work visas after having arrived in Germany. Apply to the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
