How to Get a Visa to Visit America From Mexico

Visiting the United States from Mexico is complicated. A Mexican can apply for a tourist visa to the United States. However, there are no guarantees of receiving one. The process is expensive and requires multiple steps. Mexicans should not make travel plans to the United States by land, sea or air without a valid tourist visa to the United States. There can be serious legal repercussions that affect present and future travel.

  1. Schedule the Appointment

      Visit the U.S. Embassy in Mexico's website. Click on the "Visas" tab and select "How to Apply."

      Complete the DS-160 form. This document must be completed and submitted online. A valid Mexican passport for at least six months after the appointment and a valid Mexican voter registration card (commonly known as the IFE) are required.

      Print out the DS-160 confirmation page. The confirmation contains a bar code, which creates electronic access for the U.S. Embassy to the applicant's DS-160 form.

      Call the numbers provided on the U.S. Embassy website to set up a tourist visa appointment. The phone numbers aren't local or toll-free calls. The calls are charged by the minute and on-hold time is common.

      Schedule the tourist visa appointment through the Internet. This is an alternative to a call to set up the appointment. As of 2010, the charge is $8.00 to receive a PIN number to register the appointment. Credit cards are the only accepted form of payment.

      Pay a nonrefundable application fee of $131. The fee must be paid at any Banamex bank. Keep the receipt.

      Enter the U.S. Embassy for the appointment. Applicants can't enter more than 30 minutes before the appointment. Only the applicant can enter the U.S. Embassy. All applicants are photographed.

      Present the Banamex receipt of payment, the confirmation page of the DS-160, and the IFE at the interview. Be prepared to present any supporting evidence, such as bank statements and pay stubs. All the evidence must show that the applicant will return to Mexico. The more tangible ties to Mexico that the applicant can show the better.

      The U.S. visa officer will issue a the decision at the appointment. If the application is approved the applicant's passport remains at the U.S. Embassy. The tourist visa is placed in the Mexican passport and sent to the owner within a week to 10 days after the appointment. Tourist visas generally are valid for 10 years. If the application is denied, apply again in the future.
