Set a scheduled routine for bottle feedings. This trains the llama to acclimate to routine and structure. Sporadic feedings that don't follow a time pattern may develop problems with the llama, such as acting out randomly when it expects to be fed.
Wean the llama off of the bottle gradually when it is old enough to eat solid food. This will prove to be a stressful time for both you and the llama, as it will fight the weaning process. Young llamas, especially males, are passionate creatures that become dependent on routine easily. They do not like change. Gradual change keeps things smooth and lessens trauma on the llama.
Use positive reinforcement while weaning the llama. Do not strike or yell at the llama, as this can lead to behavioral issues such as Berserk Male Syndrome. Berserk Male Syndrome affects male llamas and is identified by the llama head butting and biting people as though they are other animals.
Socialize the llama while bottle feeding and weaning it. A common issue that arises from bottle-fed llamas is the level of dependency they develop toward their handler. They can become reliant on their owner and detached from other animals when bottle fed too long and kept from social environments. Keeping them around other llamas, pets and people helps them steer clear of this common problem.
Provide the llama with treats after it has been weaned. Different llama treats can help the llama forget about nursing such as dehydrated fruit slices and even fresh fruit.
