Measure the width of the interior of the cargo area in the van or truck to determine the length of the shoring beam needed. Although the beams are extendable, choosing a beam with a length close to that of the available space will provide a stronger hold.
Ensure that the truck or van you are renting or purchasing has the E or A frame tracks installed in the cargo area to allow for the attachment of shoring beams. The tracks in standard-sized trucks are generally located at the midway point between the ceiling and floor of the cargo area, with one track on both the left and right sides. Insert one of the shoring beam's extendable heads into the one of the tracks so that is near the edge of the freight to prevent it from sliding during transport.
Line the shoring beam up with the track on the other side of the cargo bed, at a parallel point to where the other end of the beam is connected. Extend the beam head on that side and insert it into the track. The spring-loaded trigger will activate, and the beam will be locked into place.
Press the trigger to release the beam head from the track and remove the beam at both ends to unload the cargo. With a cargo under the recommended maximum weight load for a standard-duty beam (2,200 pounds), a single shoring beam should be sufficient to prevent the cargo from moving around.
