How to Use 240V Plugs

Along with new languages, you will find a variety of electrical sources when traveling across the world. While the United States runs on a 120-volt standard, much of the world uses a 240-volt standard, creating some difficulty when attempting to use your electronics in faraway lands. In order to keep plugged in with your laptop or camera, you need a voltage converter, easily found at any department store or in shops in the international terminal of an airport.

Double-check to make sure that your electronic product even needs a voltage converter. Examine the back, close to the power outlet, and see if there are any markings. If the product says something along the lines of "110v-240v," then you can plug the device in without worry. However, if the device says "110-120v," then the converter is indeed required.

Plug the converter into the electrical outlet. Depending on the country's standard, the type of prongs may differ. Plug converters specific to the country's standard will be available in department stores or airports in the country. Consult the "World Travel Plug Adapter" guide to see what plugs your country requires.

Ensure that the 240v converter is stepping the voltage down to 120v. There will often be a toggle switch on the side that will have a selection between 240v and 120v. Select 120v. If there is no switch, then the converter automatically steps down to 120v.
