How to Seal a New Tent

Heading into the back-country and camping beneath the star-filled sky is the perfect weekend for many people. However, if you have your tent pitched and the heavens open up and soak your new tent, you and your belongings, it will not be a comfortable night. Taking the time to prepare your new tent properly by sealing the seams will ensure a dry, comfortable night of rest.

Instructions

    • 1

Make certain that the tent is clean and dry. Pitch your tent. Pull the tent and fly taut. Apply the painter's tape about a quarter-inch on both sides of the seams on all the interior walls.

    • 2

Pay particular attention to the fly and the tent floor. Apply sealant to the interior wall seams, extending the coverage to the painter's tape. Apply sealant to the tent floor. Apply sealant to exterior seams in the same manner as the interior. Avoid getting the sealant on the zippers.

    • 3

Place the rain fly on the tent, upside down so that the inside seams are exposed. Seal the fly in the same manner as the tent. Leave the tent to dry for between 12 and 24 hours.

    • 4

Test the seams. Pitch the tent normally, turn on your water sprinkler and set it to rain on your tent. Turn off your water sprinkler after about an hour. Enter the tent to look for leaks. If there are leaks, let the tent dry and repeat the sealing process in the leaking seams.

Store your dry tent outside of the stuff sack and out of direct sunlight.
