Reynoldsburg, located just east of Columbus in Franklin County, offers many attractions for senior citizens in the area. Reynoldsburg is known as "The Birthplace of the Tomato" for the development by Alexander Livingston of the "paragon" tomato, the first tomato grown for commercial use. The town also prides itself on the Scottish heritage of the area. With so much history, there is much to see and do--from touring gardens and historical sites to enjoying community concerts and ice cream socials.

    • Any resident of Ohio can submit their homegrown tomatoes in the contests at the Tomato Festival.

      Reynoldsburg hosts the annual Tomato Festival in Huber Park each year in the early fall with festivities lasting two days. You can watch the local talent show, listen to the high school band or sample tomatoes in conventional and non-conventional recipes. The 2010 Tomato Festival included a flea market, pancake breakfast and classic car cruise-in. If you are retired with some free time to spare you can sign up to be a volunteer and help work at the festival.

    Reynoldsburg Tartan Day

    • Each year the Reynoldsburg Senior Center hosts the annual Tartan Day celebration to honor the vast Scottish heritage in the area. This is an opportunity for those 55 and older to get involved with the community by helping during the festival. The event is sponsored by the Daughters of Scotland, the Mid-Ohio Scottish Heritage Society and the Scottish American Military Society. Tartan Day is full of Scottish music, food and activities. The 2010 Tartan Day celebration included a display of sheep herding with border collies, ancient Scottish weaponry and Welsh country dancing.

    Annual Activities

    • The community of Reynoldsburg holds annual events throughout the year for the enjoyment of local senior residents and visitors alike. Share your green thumb or dust off that horned instrument and join in on the fun at the annual plant sale and garden tour at the Livingston House, or a community band concert. You can also attend the Mount Carmel Fitness Challenge at the Reynoldsburg Senior Center or Taste of Reynoldsburg in Huber Park. Huber Park hosts a Family in the Park night each month, giving senior citizens a chance to spend time with their grandchildren. Check out the park's Farmer's Market every Thursday in July, August and September for a selection of fresh produce and other locally produced food items.
