How to Obtain a Transit Visa in India

All foreign nationals traveling through India, except for residents of Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives, require a visa, which must be applied for before travel. A transit visa grants the traveler the right to travel through India for a period of three days. The visa must be used within 15 days of issue. In order to obtain a transit visa for India, the traveler must have a passport with at least six months of remaining validity and be able to submit proof of onward travel along with their application.

  • Passport with at least six months of validity and at least two blank visa pages
  • Completed visa application, available online
  • 2 passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of address: photocopy of a state issued driving license or utility bill (gas, water, sewage or electric)
  • Airline ticket
  • Visa for final travel destination

      Fill out the online India visa application (See Resources for link). Pay the application fee by credit card -- the fee varies based on the number of entries required. Print out and sign the application.

      Gather supporting documents, as listed above. Submit your documents to the appropriate Indian consulate (Washington DC, New York, San Francisco, Chicago or Houston). The state of residence will determine which consulate is appropriate.

      Track the status of your application online (See Resources). When the application is approved, the passport containing the visa affixed to the pages will be returned. Processing times can be as little as approximately 10 business days.
