How to Obtain a Visa for India

All visitors to India need to apply for a visa before arriving in the country. As of 2007, the Indian Embassy in the United States has outsourced the majority of its visa application and processing services to Travisa Outsourcing. Those with diplomatic passports should still apply to the Indian Embassy, but all other passport types are handled by Travisa. Fortunately, a central website and short application form make the application process relatively quick. You can receive your Indian visa in as little as one week.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the India Visa Center on the Travisa Outsourcing website by following the link provided under Resources.

    • 2

Click on "Get an India Visa" from the top navigation bar. On the following page, click "Start a New Application" and then "Apply by Mail."

    • 3

Select the correct answers from the drop-down menu, including requested visa type, nationality and state of residence. There are 13 types of Indian visas. The most commonly-requested are tourist and student visas. See the Resources section for a list of requirements for each visa type. Click "Continue."

    • 4

Make a note of the address listed at the bottom of the page. This is where you will send your completed application form. After writing down the address, click on "India Visa Application." You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the application form. If you don't have this program, click the link displayed entitled "Get Adobe Reader." Click "Continue" to go to the application form.

    • 5

Enter all the requested information into the spaces provided. Enter your passport number, issue date and expiration date. You will also need to provide details on where you plan to go in India, when you plan to leave the United States and your proposed place of entry into India. Enter the name and address of a reference in India--either a friend, relative or the hotel where you will be staying. Click "Continue" to go to through each page.

    • 6

Review the information you provided on the summary page to ensure it is accurate. Click "Print" and a printable version of the form will be displayed. Print this version of the completed application and sign the form.

    • 7

Send your printed and signed application, your actual passport, two passport photos, a photocopy of your driver's license showing your current address and a money order for $13 (as of 2009) written out to Travisa Outsourcing. You must send your actual passport--not a copy. Send these documents via FedEx or UPS to the address you noted in Step 4. The address will vary based on your location.

    • 8

Wait for your passport and visa to be sent back to you. Applications take approximately 3 to 5 days to process, plus shipping time, so expect to receive your passport and visa within 7 to 10 days.
