Begin the transit visa application process. If you will be staying in the country for a short period of time (generally three days or less) primarily to change flights you will be required to obtain a transit visa. The application can be found on the Russian Federation Embassy website under the "transit visas" link.
Fill out the application. The application consists of basic questions such as full name, address, past employers, schooling, citizenship and passport information. You will also need to attach a passport photo to the application.
Make sure your passport is valid. Your passport will need to have at least six months on it before it expires, and must also have at least one available page for stamps and stickers required for the visa.
Acquire the proper visa for your country of final destination. If your final destination is going to require you to have a visa you must provide a photocopy of the visa and submit it with the trainsit visa application. The Russian Federation may also request to see the original copy of your final destination visa before you enter the country. This step is required only if you need a visa to enter your final destination country.
Make photocopies of your airline tickets. You are required to submit these photocopies as part of the application process to prove that you will be leaving the country within the allotted amount of time.
Write a statement of intent. This must state the reason that you are entering the country, your flight schedule and your itinerary while you are in Russia.
Submit your application in person or through an agency. You are not allowed to mail in the application. You can submit the application in person through the Russian embassy or consulates. There are locations in Washington DC, New York, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle. If you cannot submit in person, on the Russian Federation Embassy website there are a few different agencies listed that you can work through. Also, when you submit you application there will be a fee. The price will vary depending on how fast you will need it to be processed, and whether it is a single or double entry visa.
