How to Get an Alabama State Identification Card

From applying for a job to grabbing a beer after work, you will find yourself in many situations where you will need to prove your identity and age. For many, this means presenting a valid Alabama driver's license. If you do not drive, you will need to obtain the Alabama state identification card which serves the same function.       Locate an Alabama driver's license office near you. Days and hours of operation will vary.

      Supply the office with a primary form of identification, such as a U.S. birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization or citizenship, a U.S. certificate of birth abroad, a resident alien card or a foreign passport with a U.S. immigration document.

      Supply the office with a secondary form of identification if your primary form of identification does not contain a photo. Acceptable forms of identification include a U.S. state ID or driver's license, school records or photo IDs, work or military IDs, tax documents and court records such as adoption or divorce decrees. If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you may also supply an employment authorization document, visa, I-94 or I-797 as your secondary document.

      Supply the office with your Social Security card. This is a requirement of those who possess a Social Security number or who are eligible to receive one. In lieu of a Social Security card, the office will accept a certified letter from the Social Security Administration with your name and number, a U.S. military ID or DD-214, a Medicare or Medicaid card or a W-2.

      Pay the fee of $23.50 (as of 2010). The driver's license office will not accept checks.
